European fashion giant and luxury retail company, Louis Vuitton, has named U.S born Ghanaian designer and D.J, Virgil Abloh as its new artistic director of menswear. Virgil, who happens to be the founder of the haute street wear label Off-White and a longtime creative director for Kanye West, becomes one of the few black designers at the top of a French heritage house, and follows in the steps of another Ghanaian, Ozwald Boateng, from Britain, who was the designer for Givenchy men’s wear from 2003 to 2007. The 37yr old Virgil Abloh was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 30, 1980 and raised in Rockford, Illinois where he attended Boylan Catholic High School. He received his Masters of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology and his undergraduate in Civil Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His parents immigrated to the U.S. from Ghana and raised him in Chicago, Illinois. He married his wife Shannon in 2009 He has collaborated with countless renowned designers and artists such as Vanessa Beecroft and Takashi Murakami.
